Five day trips from Panama City
An extinct volcano, an island half an hour away by ferry, an indigenous community in the rainforest and duty-free shopping. All without sleeping outside the city.

Panama is a small country, and that works in the traveller's favour: from the capital you can reach completely different landscapes in two or three hours. These are five trips that fit into a day and do not require changing hotel.
1. El Valle de Antón, inside a volcano
Two hours from the city, El Valle de Antón is built literally inside the crater of an extinct volcano. The altitude gives it a cool climate all year round, which is welcome in the tropics. Its handicraft market is among the best in the country, and trails lead from the town to El Macho waterfall and the hot springs.
There is also a conservation centre with Panamanian species, including the golden frog, a national symbol and now extinct in the wild.
2. Taboga, the Island of Flowers
An hour by ferry from the Amador Causeway and you are already in another rhythm. Taboga is a fishing village of colourful houses on the hillside, with one of the oldest churches on the continent and calm-water beaches. It is the simplest trip: no early start and no road journey.
3. The Emberá community, upriver
You arrive by dugout canoe along the Chagres river, inside the National Park that supplies the Canal with water. The Emberá community welcomes visitors with dances, handicrafts and a lunch of fish and plantain served on a leaf. The journey usually includes a stop at a waterfall for a swim.
This is a cultural visit, not a show: you are entering someone's home. Asking before taking photographs is the least you can do.
4. Colón and the Free Zone
On the Caribbean side lies the second-largest free trade zone in the world. It is the least scenic trip and the most practical: international brands at wholesale prices. It is best to go with organised transport and know in advance what you are looking for, because the Free Zone is enormous.
5. Gamboa and the Canal
The closest of them all: half an hour to the rainforest and the locks. Ideal if you are short on time or if it is your first day in the country and you are still adjusting to the time change.
How to choose
- Travelling with children: Taboga or Gamboa, for the simple logistics.
- Looking for nature and cooler weather: El Valle de Antón.
- Interested in culture: the Emberá community.
- Want a Caribbean beach: San Blas, though it takes a full day and an early start.
- Going shopping: Colón.
All of them can be combined into multi-day itineraries. On a week-long stay, the usual approach is two days for the city and the Canal, one for San Blas and another for the interior.
